6:45 am this Fri just gone and I hear my chickens wake me up with a racket. I look out my bedroom window (I was still in bed) and in the dim light (sunrise was approx 7:20) I can just about make out a fox running frantically infront of the run trying to get in.
My first reaction was to open window making threatening noises, but not shouting in case neighbours also wake up. I see fox run up the 6 foot fence and onto roof of run. The 6 foot fence was like nothing for the fox, it sprinted up it in a second like a cat. That's it, I jump of bed, into my slippers and run downstairs and out into garden. I left a rake lying there, so I pick it up and start heading towards fox with rake infront of me in a threatning manner making noises. Fox looks at me from above run roof and jumps behind out of my garden and away it goes.
It really shook me up. I was so close to loosing my chickens, fortunately coop and run were secure enough. But my problem is I normally leave my chooks free ranging around garden 1 hour after sunrise until approx 1 hour before sunset. I'm not so worried about night, when they are safely locked away, but during the daytime when they are free ranging in the garden i am really worried. I was in 2 minds about letting them out after this because there are not usually people around MOST of the time. Fortunately they have been safe over last 3 days since fox came close to dawn.
So now what? I have a 6 foot fence all around my garden, will fox be brave enough to climb over this during daylight hours or just at night?
did I do enough to scare it off so it is not likely to come back?
Should I not let my chickens out of their coop during daylight hours (I really don't want to keep 12 chickens cooped up in a 12'x8' run most of the day)?
I need some advice for daylight hours wildybeast or anyone else. I can't place a trap in the garden because the chickens will just walk into trap.
I cannot put spikes around top of fence for stupid legal reasons/
will an 8 foot fence be any better?
Wildy, if you can answer some of these questions and advise, I'd be really grateful. I would call you in but your too far from me in Birmingham.
