Chick colour. Help please.

Postby Lindsay » 25 Jun 2012, 19:07

I put a Silver duckwing Araucana cock over a pure black Araucana hen. I know he is the father because they are in a completely seperate breeding pen, and I waited a few days in case sperm from another cock was still viable inside her.

Theoretically, they should be fifty percent male and female, and every one of them pure black.

But ... the first of the eggs has hatched, and it is white. Not a nice soft yellow, but practically snow white!

What has happened?

I don't know about the genetics, but I think a hen can retain sperm for longer than a few days................. ;) :? :)

What other possible cockeral might it be?

My only other cock is a black/copper - which also give 100 percent black :?

And although there were other hens in with her in the breeding pen, they were Limousines which I put in so that she wouldn't get the undivided attention of the cock. I chose them because they lay a pale brown egg, and there is no way to mix up a blue egg with their's.

It is a mystery, and annoying. I now have another three black Araucanas in with him. There is nothing more like a waiting game when trying to breed for a specific colour!

Time for new glasses ... I had a better look this morning. It isn't pure white as I had thought, but has two brown blotches. One other has hatched, and thankfully it is black. I still don't understand where the white came from. I wish I could get my aged brain round colour genetics.
