To eat or not to eat, cracked egg.....

Post by lifeflower » 16 Mar 2015, 10:32

So my hens just started laying. And today I noticed one of the eggs had a crack at the top. I googled whether or not you can eat it and I read mixed answers. I hated to waste it. I gave the shell back to the girls with some scratch and they ate it up. But for some reason the thought of wasting that egg bothered me. I know. Probably a rookie response.

Rather depends on your view of hygiene. We've eaten cracked eggs, eggs with soft shells & even ones with holes in them, to no ill effect! 8)

However, only when they've been found clean or freshly laid. If they've been rolling around in the mud &/or chicken poo for ages, then I might think again...!

Welcome to the forum, btw! :)

As long as it doesn't smell bad, and is cooked properly (i.e. don't use it to make Mayonnaise for example), then get it in the pan and enjoy, I say

Cracked eggs go in cakes or something similar in our house. As long as they are subjected to full cooking heat throughout you'll not come to any harm.
