Garlic flowers

If you also want your own fruit and veg, as well as eggs and chickens, here's the area to discuss it.

Garlic flowers

Post by Shonagh » 18 Aug 2013, 01:52

Hi all,

I grew garlic this year and a couple of plants grew flowers.

I left them on while drying and the flowers have opened and have what appears to be seeds in them, almost like tiny cloves.

Should these be planted?

Not sure quite what to do with them!

Thanks,

Shonagh

from experience I can tell you that if you just leave the plants, the seeds will drop off and what was originally a few garlic plants will become a garlic bed. I planted ten garlic cloves two years ago, which have flowered every year since, and left them, and I reckon I must have about 60 garlic plants now ... and fresh garlic is utterly delicious (though strong!!!)
my chooks: Sage&Onion, Roger the randy cockerel, Squawkbox, Bonnie 'N' Clyde, Pancakes, Custard, Omelette & EggNog. Plus four garden cats and another half dozen feral ones that I feed. And a nursery of pipistrelle bats in the verandah roof ..

Excellent. I'll find a wee place to plant them!
