Cull the offender straight away(before she teaches the rest and you end up with a useless flock of egg eaters) is the only way to deal with the problem but that will offend some, you,ll get some success stories of filling eggs with mustard etc curing it but the best way i found of dealing with the pr...

Re: Fox & Crows

Yesterday I lost one of my three cocks to a fox. When the guinea fowl and bantams started yelling, it was too late. I was at the bottom of a hole, and by the time I'd clambered out & got to the top of the garden, the dogs had already gone off in pursuit. Today I heard he crows yellng their warning ...

Re: mites again.

What type of mites ? If they're Red mites you'll need to act quick as they can drain a bird in no time, especially a hen thats sitting.

Re: Broody hens together?

Just had two that sat in the same box with 16 eggs between them, apart from a few squabbles over which eggs were whose they were fine, however the trouble started when the chicks began to hatch and one decided she wanted all the chicks,i split them up and divided the chicks between them. It would have...

Re: Hen not laying

Pop a couple of dummy eggs in the nestbox,it'll at least teach her when she pecks at them out of curiosity theres no reward and also where she is to lay when the time comes.

Re: Red mite, Drfish and Neem oil.

Jillychick , Ive not sprayed it on the birds ,I'm not sure if its a good idea as its very oily. Maybe I should have because Ive had a bad week and have lost two of my lovely pullets which has made me very sad.. I thought I was getting on top of the job but a couple of nights ago , one of the girls ...

Re: Arg! Scaly leg

Looks as if something needs to be drawn from that foot alright before it gets any more swollen or infection sets in.... a good scrub with hand hot water, dry and if you can get it ideally Magnesium Sulphate paste, its the best for drawing out anything both in humans and animals,a good blob of the past...

Re: Newbie and help with id of a chicken!

I'd say its some sort of Heinze 57(mixed breed) with possible a bit of Barbu D'uccle in the mix. I'd be very wary of picking up strays like this and to be quite honest it does'nt look the healthiest specimen, possibly has a bit of Scaly leg going on there too, you're taking a big risk mixing it in wit...

Re: Introduction Issues

You will eventually have to let them get on with t and sort it out between them but maybe wait till you re around to keep an eye on proceedings and only interfere if theres blood drawn. A couple of distractions may help such as a car tyre filled with sand or peat moss with some mixed grain thrown in...

Re: Marans

Theres about 7 or 8 of my Marans eggs on this tray, them being the darkest ones, the rest are a mix of SS,Amrock and Cream Legbars Image0691.jpg Thats a fairly light colour for a Maran egg, mine tend to start the season laying very dark brown eggs and gradually taper off into a slightly darker shade th...

Re: Marans

They look pretty good to me in the bottom pic, they do tend to get that tanned colour as the year goes on especially if they are out free ranging and its a good year for sunshine, cocks with their lighter grey feathering do tend to take on a golden colour sheen on their back feathers too. Best way to ...
