Re: Hybrid hen never laid?

Never an easy thing to do but for the best.I would open her up and have a look to see if anything obvious is showing if possible.

Re: Hybrid hen never laid?

As you might have seen in your search a penguin like stance would be a main symptom of a bird with ep orbeing egg bound, prognosis is not good and dispatch either by yourself or a vet is probably the best option.

Re: Hybrid hen never laid?

If you type "eggbound hen" into the search engine here (top right hand çorner) theres plenty of info on different methods for treating this if the bird is indeed eggbound, try a dashof cod liver Oil on some mixed grain and give her a good check over for lice/mites.

Re: Found chicken on her back!! - Sad news :-(

The honest answer is no,if its a suspected Mareks case then all bedding should be burned and all coops/houses should be sprayed with a Dept of Ag product like Virkon-S. Surprised the vet did,nt tell you that. Was the bird sent for testing by a Dept lab ? If not it should have been as thats the only ...

Re: Found chicken on her back!!

Presuming she,s up to date worming wise and has been checked for any lice or mite burden.
Sounds like she could be egg bound which can result in loss of balance, movement, unless she,s very old and just coming to the end of her days.

Re: Genetics

At a guess i,d say somewhere back in the breeding a white Leghorn strain was used to increase egg laying capacity and what you got chick wise were throwbacks to that.

Re: Birdie I.D please!

Probably a bit of a Heinze 57,Hybrid of some sort especially if the seller did,nt know, could be a bit of light sussex somewhere in there, but if she is healthy, fits in and lays well then all is good

Re: chicken house & run completed

I still think vermin will find their way under and into the shed, over the many years, I, ve kept fowl I found anything thats sits at ground level is very attractive to vermin, once they gain access underneath they can knaw through timber extremely easily. Small guage weld mesh will prevent this and...

Re: chicken house & run completed

It's lovely! =D> Only thing I would add is more ventilation. ;) A lot more ventilation too, I would also have raised the shed up a lot more off the ground, damp problems could ensue and unless the underside of the floor has been covered in small guage weld mesh vermin problems will definitely ensue...

I would agree with that, he, s not going to get any smaller and the stress won, t do the hens any good. Make a good dinner out of him and get a smaller more suitably sized cock for your hens.

Re: LETHARGIC NEW HEN

Personally would take the two of them back, ask for a refund and source them from a different breeder, that might not be possible now though for as HW said you should have taken the original offer of a different bird from the seller. They can now say (if you already had other birds that they might hav...
