Re: Red Mite Prevention

I would make up a spray of eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, tea tree oil. Mix it with a little bit of milk, or alcohol then add water. About 10 drops of each, and have a daily spray around as a preventative.

Gosh only just seen this. I'm rather shocked as I was down at Poultry Park only a couple of weeks before. Such sad news.

Re: Genetically modified feed

I try to eat an organic diet where possible, and so also supply my hens with organic feed. I will do my best to avoid gmo foods if nothing else but to support 'the other side'. I want the people that be know that I am prepared to pay more for the quality of food I want. I have been told some time ag...

Re: Help with my poo!

You mentioned blood in poo, I know that coccidiosis can cause bloody poos. There are 7 strains that cause it, and each can give a different level of severity I believe. Youngish chickens are most suscesptible. I managed to bring back to health a hen that had it, thanks to the vets help. But she lost...

Re: mites on me !

You can spray your house with the oil spray that I suggested and I also recomend putting some in with your laundry. By the way, I forgot to suggest that you would need to put about a teaspoon of cheap gin/vodka to dilute the oils in the water, (milk or detergent is also used but not nice to spray on...

Re: mites on me !

Do you have any tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil. If so dilute a few drops of each in a couple of cups of water and give yourself a good head to toe wash. It does kill them, but these are very strong oils and you have to be mindful of the strength of these oils as they very potent, and can make small ...

Re: Sick Cockerel

He sounds really poorly, I would feed him up with urgency. I would try a mixtrure of nice foods for him, some fish, broken peanuts, peas, cheese, egg, oats, if you segregate him whilst he eats he might not have a lot of intrest, but if you put 1 or 2 of your least greediest hens with him, he might g...

Re: Edible Garden Show

I went to the bee keeping talk on Sunday, it was quite good, but I want to be a natural bee keeper, possibly using a skep hive, and only harvest any 'unusued honey' at start of spring, bees don't need us to pilage from them when they need it.

Re: Red mite treatment

I use newspaper daily under the roost bars now, and throw in about 10 pieces of corrugated card board as mites like to use cardboard as a home. My cleaning spray that I wipe the roost bars with (and spray in gaps) has eucalyptus, tea tree, and lavender oil. I also treat the hens with barrier red mit...

I like sprinkling sesame seeds around. They are so small it takes a while to find them all. Hanging carrots and apples up are also useful.

Re: Our Hen Houses/ Coops

Most of my ideas are formed by just sitting in the run and watching and day dreaming. I loathe ground based feeders and drinkers, as they spoil so easily, and when suspended they give the hens a bit more room. After these photos were taken I discovered the trigger happy chickens gizmo feeder so I ha...

Thanks Chris, sadly all that lovely green lawn is mostly brown now, but I will try again with it in the spring.
