Re: Squatting (and my new hybrids and there new home)

Bunches of nettles tied and hung up go down well and contain plenty of iron, kateds list
Is good.
I,m not a fan of feeding lettuce, it can give them the squits and thy can dehydrate epecially in hot weather.

Re: Squatting (and my new hybrids and there new home)

Lovely coop,do they get out to free range at all ?
If not feeding some greens will increase the quality of the eggs, especially the yolks, dandilions, docks, clover grass cut up with a scissors and hanging the odd head of cabbage for them to peck will relieve the bordom of being on bare ground.

Re: Broody nest fouling

Feeding only wheat rather than pellets while the hen is sitting should keep droppings from getting to messy. Normally lifting the bird out once daily to poo is enough,i used to close the broody coop while the hen is out for10 minutes to give her tome to do her business. Just don,t forget to reopen i...

Re: Housing in Winter

Theres absolutely no need to insulate any coop or house for poultry even during the harshest weather. We,ve had it down to -15 here and no problems at all. Once the coop is dry and draught free and the birds are on a good diet they,ll do just fine. In fact increasing the temp in a coop or house can c...

Re: Chicken pecks feathers from other chicken

Boredom is one reason for feather pecking especially if confined and not getting to freerange. Try putting some distractions in the run, hang a couple of heads of cabbage, throw down some straw and scatter some mixed grain am and pm,put in a sandbox for dustbating, branche for climbing on etc. Use some...

Must be a Maran thing,my cuckoo marans are similar,i just out it down to an over production of ink,i give them a minute or two to dry off and then gently rub off any shavings that have stuck to them.

Re: Help sexing Pekins please.

First look i,d say 3 pullets but i know little or nothing about pekins. I used to use a piece of white card sometimes to help sex hard to sex birds, take them one by one and place the card under the neck feathers, just get 2 or 3 feathers on the card and see if the ends of the feathers are rounded or ...

Re: Vaccinating

This debate has come up plenty of times on here over the years, the genral consensus being that for the hobby or backyard breder it is not financially viable to go this route and also issues can be had by mixing vaccinate and unvaccinated stock. Best option for you would be to join a local poultry cl...

Re: white sussex x silkie have I been duped?

Unless the seller has discovered a new way of producing Gold Tops then yes you have been duped. Its always been Gold silkie cock x white/light sussex hen as far as i know though in truth i,ve never bred them myself. The Gold over Silver cross would give you gold to brown chicks = pullets and light y...
