Re: Fox & Crows

What a shame so many people on here are more exercised about an interest in correct grammar and spelling than the issue at hand. Crow numbers are way out of control. Other than being shot by people, there is nothing to control their numbers and their numbers really do need to be controlled. They are...

Re: Cockerel sitting on eggs!

Moriarty, why don't you put some fertile eggs under him and see what happens? He might make a super mum!

Re: Fox & Crows

Subruss, it's 'of', not 'off'. If you're going to try taking the high ground, make sure you get your grammar and spelling correct in the process.

Re: Fox & Crows

No Subruss, not hyperbole at all. A factual statement which I believe to be true. I detest crows. I like to see dead ones. End of.

Re: Fox & Crows

Who said the species needs to be exterminated? I certainly didn't. Their numbers are way out of control and they need to be culled on a massive scale. I'll be first in line to join the cullers...

Re: Sneezing hens

No, Gertie50, Tylan is perfectly safe for egg consumption. It used to be that you had to have a 28 day withdrawal period but that was revoked a year or so back. I got some from my vet earlier in the year and he confirmed no withdrawal. Don't worry, it's absolutely 100% safe :-)

Re: Fox & Crows

The only good crow is a dead crow. They nick the eggs, they'll eat the chicks if they're not protected and they're a downright pest. They've got no redeeming features in my book!!

Re: Crows Stealing Eggs

Farmer Warren, the crows I've got hanging up are ones that I found freshly dead in my sister in law's field. I would happily kill the crows - I've done so in the past and will do so in the future but trapping any creature is, for me, cruel and something I would not countenance.

Re: Advice on Integrating Chicks

I never integrate chicks before they are 16 weeks. At that age a) they're big enough to look after themselves and b) their immune systems are well enough developed to cope with anything they may catch from being with the others. Also, is your main run covered? If not, at 2 weeks old, they will be ta...

Re: Sneezing hens

Sounds like they could have Mycoplasma. It's often triggered by stress - e.g. bringing new birds into a flock. Myco isn't curable but the symptoms can be treated with Tylan - there is no withdrawal period for the eggs with Tylan but as it's a POM antibiotic, you have to ask your vet for it. Be prepa...

Re: Flamin' magpies :-(

If whoever started this thread (or anyone else for that matter!) is still having trouble with Magpies stealing eggs, I have found the solution. Get a couple of dead ones and hang them up in the pen. I've had crows stealing in excess of 10 eggs a day for the last week or so and I've been at my wits e...

Re: Crows Stealing Eggs

Thanks Henwife - I actually hung two dead crows around the pen yesterday and it's working a treat! I've already collected about a dozen eggs and most of my girls lay in the afternoon, so we're definitely back in business! I have to say that the pen looks like a set from the Blair Witch Project and I...

Re: Crows Stealing Eggs

Thanks for the replies; Farmer Warren, I'm very against traps of any description so a Larsen trap is a no-go I'm afraid, but thank you for the suggestion. Henwife, I've tried the curtain idea but it's not stopped them. I'm going to try the corpse route - I'll hang a couple up as high as I can so the...

Crows Stealing Eggs

I am at my wits end. I have a massive problem with crows stealing eggs from the nesting houses. Usually I get around 25 eggs a day but the last few days, I've been collecting 5 to 8 a day - today so far, I've only collected three!! Anyone got any ideas how to stop this? My brother is going to come r...

Re: Blind Orpington

I had a little brown hen who went blind. She lived happily for another three years. I made her a separate pen to be in during the day (the other hens bullied her) and at night, I brought her in to a box in the porch where she adored being. When the weather was bad, she stayed in the porch because sh...
