Poorly Brahma

One of my Brahmas doesn''t seem well. She has white sloppy poos and seems to be listless and dazed. She is drinking copious amounts of water but today has eaten little. I know it's hot but she has been doing this for a few days and is constantly at the water trough. She did eat mealworm and corn yes...

Re: Floor covering in run.

I've tried wood chip and sand in my partially covered run. I prefer the sand but find that it starts to stink after a couple of months and jeyes doesn't really sort it. The floor of the run is tiled, so I am wondering if I could leave it bare. This would mean I can wash it down regularly. The birds ...

Re: Nipple Drinkers...?

I considered the Australian product but decided on a galvanised bucket from my local feed store. It works well and the birds don't foul it at all.

Dustbath

I have a sharp sand filled dustbath in the run, but the hens don't seem to use it. I let them free range yesterday and spotted two of them dustbathing in a raised flower bed containing soil and woodchip mulch. I'm thinking of maybe adding some topsoil or compost to the sharp sand. What do others use...

Re: Japanese quail housing?

I keep 4 quail in a 5ft double tier rabbit hutch. They only seem to use the bottom part though, so I have two 10 week old pekin growers in the top part. They seem very content and lay every day.

Re: Floor coverings?

I have a local wood yard that do woodchip. I asked a local landscape gardenener where he got his mulch from and found that they also do pure wood chip. £3.50 for a large bag.

Re: Floor coverings?

I have wood chip on the floor of my run. I poo pick as and when I spot it, but am wondering whether to wash the wood chip or how long to leave before changing it. I could brush it out and wash the tiles then rinse down the woodchip and replace. Any suggestions?

Re: Not using perches. How to help them get to them

Maybe I should get rid of them and save my back getting to the coop!

Just seems a shame not to use the height. Are there any other birds I could keep in this set up, alongside the chickens that may use the perches....Pheasant, quail?

Not using perches. How to help them get to them

I introduced my bantams last week and all seems fine. I fitted several perches which I tried to make accessible via various logs and branches. However they are getting onto the top of the coop but not the perches. Any thoughts?

Re: Our Hen Houses/ Coops

Just about ready!

Just need to decide on a suitable floor covering...pure woodchip or a woodchip mulch?

I pick the hens up next week. 4 Pekins a Serama and 2 Japanese Bantams.

Wood chip or wood chip mulch on run floor

I have been to a local wood yard today, they have woodchip and wood chip mulch. The woodchip is a yellow colour and seems freshly chipped. The mulch is a darker colour and seems to be an aged product.

Which should I use on the floor of the run, Wood chip or wood chip mulch or either?

Re: Pulley feeder idea

I painted mine with plastic spray paint and creosoted the legs. Looks much prettier now! I didn't use a spring but bought one of these instead: http://triggerhappychickens.co.uk/#
