Thanks very much for the new thread ...
There are many great resources on the net for Muscovies ... Here is one of my favourites from the Domestic Waterfowl Club - lots of info and lots of pictures ...
http://www.domestic-waterfowl.co.uk/mozzie.htm
But let me just tease out some interesting points from this article:
Muscovies are the only domestic ducks that are not derived from mallard stock.
The nicest character of any of the breeds with a pronounced sense of humour/ very intelligent and head of any escape committee !
Dog or cat baiting is a speciality.
Although relatively silent, the male produces a low hissing sound, and the female has a short, weak "coo" but "chirps" and talks to the eggs as they hatch making the babies very independant as they recognize their mothers alarm call
Incubation 35-36 days ... not 28 of most ducks
Muscovies are the supreme mothers and broodies. They will protect the young from predators even if it means their own death in order for the young to escape.
They are the 'sentinel' bird for D.V.E and for Avian Influenza as they succumb before any other breed......if a lot keel over suddenly call the vet as they are bombproof otherwise

Hi Caroline,
Congratulations on your muscovies ...
Are you a new duck-keeper like me, or do you already have some other breeds ...? What made you choose muscovies ... Just out of interest ...
When weather has cleared up enough here to go out and take pictures (storm-force gales, rain and sleet in western isles), I'll post some pictures of mine ...
Missy = 14 month old girl ... wild ...
Monty = 2 month old boy, but already twice as big as Missy, and daft as a brush ... hand-reared from eBay egg ...

We started with ducks in July, not long after we got our first Silkies. At first after my research I got a trio of Khaki Campbells for eggs, it was soon obvious that my trio was the wrong way round (2 males and a female) so much for loads of eggs. So we got 2 female runners, then we went to get another 2 female runners, and ended up buying a trio of runners, an aylesbury drake and a silver appleyard drake. Next we re homed a female crested female, who immediately paired up with the aylesbury drake. The Silver Appleyard has now gone off to live with someone who had 5 females and no drake.
Anyway, when we got the runners the guy had a great Muscovy that was really friendly and we just fell in love with him, so we now have a pair.
We also have 4 newly hatched Runner Ducklings, and another hopefully on its way today.

| The ducks live in the front garden which has pea gravel all over it, they are allowed in the back garden for a few hours a day, so it never damages the grass. |

If I could only keep one breed, chickens or ducks, it would be Muscovies. They are my most favourite of all. I have 20 at the moment and of the 20, Grey Front is my most favourite of all time. She is a darling |

How likely are Muscovies to fly?
We have a mother and her (now) 7 ducklings. Mum's wing was severely clipped when they arrived, but is now obviously re-growing as she's moulting. The youngsters still have "silly little stubs" where wings will eventually be.
If I don't HAVE to clip, I'd rather not ... but don't want my ducks disappearing, either!! |

One of our ladies surprised herself and flew over the barn last year.
The other lady can manage a hover over the 2' fence if she really feels the need, which is once in a blue moon.
Phil, our male, really thinks it's far too much effort. |

Thanks for that, Stephen ... in which case, I'll take my chances for now, and see what happens. Birds always have a much better chance of escaping from predators if they can fly! |

odd question but is there only the fours colours in the black and white, the lavender, white and liver?
Fancied getting a few eggs from liver stock and/or lavender. such funny animals ours fly onto next doors garage to chase the wild birds off, escape artists but such characters. |
