|
|
| This summer, I had a wwoofer from Germany who was skilled at hand-spinning wool. She said she did spinning with a wheel as well - we went down to Scalpay to see Sheila Roderick at Scalpay Linen (who is also a TNN/vulture fanatic) and she showed me how to spin on the wheel. I am now the proud owner of a spinning wheel, ordered from a retired gentleman in Germany who makes them as a hobby! One our neighbours has kindly given us 4 bags of fleeces for me to play with... guess I'll be busy this winter, once I get the hang of the bloomin' contraption! |

Spinning is nice and relaxing - once you've got over the fag of carding.

I love spinning - it's so meditative! - You can spin straight from the fleece without carding, once you get used to the draw... depends how fussy you are!!! (or impatient!)
Enjoy! |

I was never lucky enough to get a fleece clean enough, I did manage it with some areas though.

| I'm still trying to get the hang of it... the thread keeps breaking just as I'm getting the rhythm of it. It will be relaxing I guess, someday! I just get mad at it for now... |

It#s one of those things that just suddenly clicks......... also depends what you are spinning, some fluff is so much easier than others. It might be worth buying a little bit of roving just to begin with. If you're breaking your yarn it might be because you're treadling too fast..... try a slower piece of music !! (I first tried to sping to rock and roll - really didn't work well!)
Someone once told me to draw until it sighs..... when you figure it out, that's exactly how it feels, but I'm not sure if it's helpful or not!! |
