I understand that red mite are attracted by the heat from the bird. I have one of those bags filled with wheat that you put in the microwave to warm up and put on achy joints. Do you think if I hung it warm on a perch they will think its a chicken or does it need to smell chicken also.
I have this lovely vision of taking it out of the coop covered in redmite and dunking it in boiling water |

I think you're hoping for a bit much there Jan, being blood suckers I should think that it's blood they smell.

I'm sure I read somewhere about red mite traps, but can't remember where.
When we had an infestation we used two small pieces of wood, one on top of the other, in the corners of the coop. The red mite used to hide under them so we knew they were still around & they were easier to check than lifting the perches.(especially if the chooks were on them at the time! ) |

They love new wood - especially pine, when I made my cavalletti perches the red mite loved one spot on them, it didn't matter how many times I creosoted them, they were back next day (so much for creosote!). I got the better of them in the end but had to spray with killer spray. The perch in the hut was a small branch with its side shoots cut - they loved the cut bits too.
