Caulies are funny things. I used to grow them years ago and they were all lovely. Then I tried to grow some in a different place and they looked more like sprouting than caulies. Last year I bought some plants I did very little with them, just stuck them in a raised vegetable bed and left them to it. I had some really lovely ones from them.
I wonder if it's to do with variety and maybe the goodness of the soil.

I think the soil around them needs to be firm so that they don't get rocked in the winds, especially when they're top heavy. Other than that I don't know. Maybe they need the soil to be well fertilised. My box was filled with compost out of my tumbler and then I bought a load of some sort of composted something. Sorry I can't remember it was a couple of years ago. These caulies of mine went into that, it had not been used for anything else.
