I thought I'd ask what unusual veg, fruit or herbs, you are growning? Or what would you, or wouldn't you, recommend from past experience!
I'm soon to be the lucky recipient of some jerusalem artichokes (thanks again, Nigel ) and I've also got seed for salsify, scozonera, hamburg parsley and evening primrose - all grown for their roots (I love seed swapping ) And then I've got beans for drying... And don't get me started on squash, or funny coloured tomatoes...
Fruit wise my weirdest is probably yellow alpine strawberries and yellow raspberries, and 5 varieties of rhubarb
And herb wise includes things like lovage (smells divine as seed, but I can't remember why I wanted it ), hyssop (to attract bees) and tansy (flea repellent for dogs)...
Oh, and all the various "greens" for the chickens
Anyone else growing "weird" stuff? Do share... |

Hibiscus esculentus Gumbo,Ladies Fingers, Bhindi
Asian Delicacy, tender annual greenhouse plant grown like a tomato. Small fruits can be used cooked on their own or added to soups, stews and sauces. The fruit should be harvested when young to encourage more production. The seed is made into 'tofu' or 'tempeh' and roasted used as a coffee substitute. Requires a warm sunny sheltered site but is best grown in a greenhouse. Sow early spring onwards @ 15-30°C in single pots, plant out June onwards at 45cm apart provide climbing support.

I'm growing grass! Is that unusual in a chicken fraternity?
Sown the seeds and it's now got a nice green glow all over the old bit of lawn that the girls ate for me. Maybe it will be grow enough to be eaten again. |

We're growing calabrese for the first time - the joys of having a veggie son & making sure he gets his greens. |

In the days when the BBC gardening site was frequented by me and had a moderated chat room - I got 'editted' for talking about types of ornamental grass with another gardener! |
