I treated myself to some telegraph poles (15 mm! ) and really thick wool today as the other thing I am knitting is taking a long time to do .
But help! I can't remember how to cast on ! (think My Mum did the last lot for me !) well I'm having a go - am I right in thinking you make the stich as if you were doing K and then slip it back onto the first needle ? It just doesn't look right - perhaps it's the chunky wool ? |

My Mum tried to teach me years ago. The stitches got so tight on the needle you couldn't move it in the end! She gave up! |

that's part of the problem - my Mum taught me right handed and I got stuck so I then went to my Grandad who taught me left handed so it's a bit mixed up in my head !
But I found they have free learn to knit / learn to crochet lesson @ John Lewis so I might go along to one of those and get it straight in my mind ! |

Did you knit that pink blanket on your spare bed - it's really pretty
I'm doing a scarf too - with the this wool it knits up really quick - good for impatient people !! - I'm alright once I get going - but my mind sometimes does go left handed on me - I used to be able to swap until I got to school and the foeced me too write with my right hand ... |

Wow, I have never learnt to knit and that would be useful! I will have to investigate the website for them....
How easy would it be to teach yourself do you think? |

Beginners knitting masterclass quite easy I'd think - if I hadn't have been confused I'd be ok .
The JL free lessons are Mon Morning 11-12
Tues Aft 3-4 and Saturday aft 12-1 Learn to crochet 3-4 Thursday aft @ Kingston - not sure if they have it other stores or not ?!
The also have various other classes but those are £20 for more than the basics .
You do need to book on 020 8547 3000 ext 4279 |

Actually the blanket on the bed was knitted by Sam's Nan...She has become partially blind and finds she can only knit squares now, So I knitted them altogether and sewed the fleece onto the back. |

ermm I'm not sure it's either that or Bluewater - but If I go to Kingston I can visit the lovely George on the way
Bluewater is probably closer - and I don't get lost on the way back

yup !
No I'd go to see George anyway, cos he's lovely , But JL is so close ..
Are you thinking of going to either of the workshops ? Knitting or crochet ? I'm not sure whether to go for the beginners one or not - I can Knit , Purl and cast on - not sure about casting off though !!! I can do chains in crochet too - but again My mum normally stars them for me !! |

To go back to the original question of casting on!
There are a couple of different techniques, the easiest way is make one stitch on your left hand kneedle. Hold this needle and with your right hand created a loop in the wool by twisting it towards yourself and then drop it onto the needle. Pull the loop tighter with your right hand, but not too tight as you will need to put another needle in to knit! Continue to drop the loops on to the needle until you have the required amount.
Does that make any sense at all? |
