Hi,
I'm new here (got introduced by Fenn) and am going to POP with excitement soon! My dear OH has built me a fab house and run (so thorough is he that it could probably contain lions, let alone a few chooks ), and tomorrow i collect my first ever chooks!!!! 2 neras and 2 white stars!
So i am off to the feed place for pellets, corn and sawdust tomorrow morning, then comes the task of getting the house out of the back door (its rather large you see) and in place in the garden! the run is all set out, we just need to put the house out with it. oh and add some perches. and the ventilation on the house is about 3 feet by 1 foot of wire mesh across the front at the top just under the roof. is this too much - will they get cold? i didnt want them not to have enough air at night you see.
oh and i must dig out a box to bring them home in. we have just moved so i *should* be swamped in boxes....

they're here!!!! and they are sooooooooo beautiful! they seem to have settled in well, scratching around and pooing liberally. now they are in the house - i expect they are a bit bemused about where they are, poor loves.
still not sure if the house will be too cold at night with the large meshed vent i have - 3 feet across by a foot deep, just under the roof. what do you think - should i find soemthing to cover it over with at night? i dont want them to suffocate or be chilly! |

If it gets VERY cold, you can always cover the hole up a bit....otherwise, theyll be fine....theyll all bunch up together and keep warm !!!
Any pics ???????? |

Mine have a pop hole which remains open in all weather Even when it's been down to minus 5, they seem fine. It's draughts which they have problems with, not too much cold air.
Remember, before we domesticated fowl, they lived in woody areas and roosted in the trees. No coop, not shavings, no pellets etc. They will keep each other warm by snuggling up, and in the summer they will spread out.
Don't forget we absolutely demand photos on here, or we'll chuck you off |

Congratulations
You had better go, now this minute, and work out how many more the house will take.
This time tomorrow you'll be wanting more
You will, you see |
