they have just announced on the local news
electronic tagging is going to be introduced on the 31st of dec next year
anybody know how this will work ,will every holder need an applicater and a reader Shocked

,i know that double tagging is going to be introduced from 31 of dec in a couple of days time
it's going to be really expensive for a couple of sheep and a couple of goats,do the tags come with info on them or do you need to imput it ,

Milkmaid, I'm sure you have already looked, but go to BFF and look in the Animal Banter forum, there is quite a lot of info on the electronic tagging in there. No-one is quite sure how it will actually work yet though. Cant quite understand the need myself as if they are scrapie tested, they already have a bolus Confused

Eartags are a nightmare to keep in lambs etc anyway so will cost a blimmin fortune. It costs me over £5.00 for each society tag at the moment so God only knows what the cost will be with double tagging AND EID tags for my flock....... Evil or Very Mad

Ouch! £5 a tag? Is that for normal tags or special ones? Here you can order normal sheep and goat tags from Jördbruksverket (the equivalent of Defra, except with organisational abilities) complete with your numbers already stamped on them for about 3.80SEK (about 30p). Ones for cows are about 60p.

Just been looking at the prices here. Stallmastaren are one of the big two producers of tags here in Sweden. They supply Jördbruksverket with the tags, and the prices they charge direct is approximately the same as Jördbruksverket do. Not that they price fix, or anything...

Anyway, traditional tags are about 3.70SEK (27p). The new RFID tags are 24-25SEK each (£1.80 - £1.87) each. The tag reader is 5700 SEK (about £427!).

Yup, society tags at £5.00 each. Cost doubles if you havent submitted a tag form by 31st May............ I suppose it covers the cost of membership privileges etc etc. In the Kerrys, you had to pay membership fees on a sliding scale dependent on amount of ewes kept, pay for a for a flock book, pay a levy for each female kept, pay per sheep registered (again a sliding scale so ewe lambs cheapest, then ewes, then tup lambs and tups at £5 each) AND buy tags on top of that so really the Blues are quite economical if I think about it Rolling Eyes

is it eu wide or just us

It's EU wide, but Sweden's put it off, too. But we can buy RFID converters to clip onto existing tags.
