| Are these the ones that you can sex really early, something about the head spot or colour of breast or something, can't quite remember. BTW the Silkies haven't crowed yet. |

The temp says 30 at the edge of the brooder.....in the centre its plenty warm enough for them !!! |
Mine was 35° at the edge, (although, I'm not sure mine was reading that acurately ) but they prefer to spend all day in the garden without heat now, and only head back indoors when they are getting cold. (usually around now)
It's currently around 27° in there and they seem happy with that |

CongHATCHulations Knobby!
Mine don't have a thermometer to read. If they huddle under the lightbulb they are too cold, if they spread way out the are too hot. I have moved them out to the shed today - they were getting too boisterous for the smaller box in the house, have tin foil over the top of the brooder to keep the heat in, chilly weather we are having just now. Lost one overnight - don't know why. Just been to check on them and they are running about and eating and drinking - then falling over for a quick snooze so they seem happy enough.
Would be interested to know if there is a way to sex marans early. Told them if they are boys I will reuse the tin foil! |

| Thanks, don't want to hijack Knobby's happy post. It was one of the marans and they seemed fine last night, wonder if it got trampled, don't know. George, will post your eggs Monday so they don't sit over the weekend somewhere. |

hello Julia, I just did a search on pp about sexing marans, I knew I'd read it somewhere ~ "Hi, it's fairly easy to tell whether your chicks are male or female - the pullet (female) chicks have a dark stripe running down their backs, whereas the males don't, are lighter in colour and have a cream or yellow spot on the top of their head. "
Hope that helps |
