Hi
I have found great success using Jays Fluid on the coop and run and surrounding area. The chooks don't seem to mind if I use this very diluted, but the other day I used it near their coop in quite a strong dilution and they were most unhappy.
Can anyone tell me the safe mix of Fluid to water because too weak and it has little effect and too strong and .............. the chooks will suffer. Has anyone else found this to be good.
By the way I also use the organic powder afterward and I have found this to help greatly. |

Hi & welcome to the forum.
What are you using it for? It's fine as a general disinfectant & cleaner, but there are better products for dealing with red mites etc.
I think the dilution ratio is probably printed on the can. Strangely enough OH used it to clean the deck area outside the pop hole yesterday, but previous to that we haven't used it for ages!
What is the organic powder you mention? |

The organic powder is called Red Mite Powder by Barrier Animal healthcare and is for use on the chooks themselves. It works well if scattered around the coop as well though.
Yes the instructions are on the tin, but I wanted to use it in a stronger dilution but wanted to know the safe levels.
You are quite right about other products being good, but I read somewhere that jays was good, and it is
I think I was trying to find something not used in general as from reading the topics here it seems that the good stuff has all been banned and the stuff that is left is not as effective as it could be.
Thanks for your help and advise, it is very much appreciated. |

When we had a bad infestation of red mite last year, we used anything & everything but in the end the only thing that seemed to work (and is still working) was Diatom, which I think is probably in the ingredients of the red mite powder & various others on the market now.
Can't really help with the stronger dilution of Jeyes Fluid, but I'm sure someone will know.
I'm not saying don't use it, but we just don't use it that much to know the safe levels. (& I hate the smell of it! ) |

Thanks Mojo and thanks Chicken palace.
Yes I am cautious of overdoing this stuff, but it does seem to kill all nasties.
I also have to admit that it stinks............anything smelling that badly must be good
Thanks again.

| god i did not realize it was poisonous to cats i used a whole bottle on cleaning my decking yesterday with the jet wash it bring it up great if you spray it on leave it for 10 Min's then jet it off i would not of used it if i had known that as i have 4 cats!mind saying that by the time i jetted it it must of been really diluted as it took a few hours to do,i always use it in the chooks run but always dilute it and kick them out for a free range first then ensure its rinsed well afterwards as the smell is bad enough to me cant imagine what it would be like for them |

| Dont suppose its helpful for a large area like decking, but if you were trying to revitalise a wooden seat or similar, Bicarbinate of soda and water to form a paste and leave on wood for 10 mins will give impressive results. (with light elbow greece and brush) |
