I went to give my girls their breakfast this morning (I have 4 chucks) and noticed my sussex buff was on the floor of the house. It was only on closer inspection that I saw she was dead. I can't believe this has happened - she was fine yesterday. She was poorly a month or so ago for a day but had recovered the day after and has been in apparent good health ever since. I have just disinfected the nest boxes and house - is there anything else I should do or worry about? Crying or Very sad

I am so upset. She was my favourite chicken and would follow me everywhere - and she was the best layer!! I am worried about getting another one because my Rhode Island bully (Gertie) is mean and vicious, attacking anything in sight. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Why is it always the favourite who pops their clogs Sad My commiserations to you.

I went out for the day on Saturday and returned home to find my favourite tamest, sweetest natured hen dead as well. The other two are absolutely fine.

So sorry you lost your girl, Justine. They can have a heart attack at any age ~ they have high blood pressure. What colour was her comb ~ it was blueish then it was a heart problem.

Another example of why we use the expression 'fell off her perch' which is what hens do. I'm not so sure of 'popped her clogs', but just be reassured that the others will be OK.
RIRs are always horrid, so I won't keep them.

Thanks for all your support. Her comb was still pink when we buried her. It sounds silly but I had a terrible nights sleep thinking about Lula. My youngest daughter (2) cannot understand why she won't wake up - its so heartbreaking. However, my eldest daughter (4) cannot wait to get a replacement!! Life goes on eh??
