I've given up My runner beans were doing quite well, but the combination of severe heat (40deg C on our patio) and strong winds have taken their toll - I've tipped the plants out for the birds this morning
They were in pots and however much I watered, it wasn't enough
Tomatoes are managing ok - tumblers are doing better than the cordon types, probably because they're the only one out of reach of the velociraptors
I've lost a couple of flower baskets tho - they've just been scorched
It really is one extreme to the other this year - it's really cold today! |

I'm struggling with some things too - my carrots (Nantes) have grown beautifully, but are tasteless (unless oven roast with olive oil and honey ) and don't mention potatoes! My Charlottes got a leaf virus, so I harvested them early, which meant I left my Premiers in the ground too long and they are now all scabby. I'm putting some late croppers in soon (in a different bed), so fingers crossed they are more successful.
My successes so far are my beetroot (oven roast with balsamic vinegar mmmmm), celery and cucumbers. My swedes, leeks and onions look great but it's too soon to tell yet. It's blowing like crazy here and has been for a couple of days so my dwarf beans and broccili are taking a bashing.
I just picked some over-ripe raspberries and chucked them to the chicks ..... they don't like them either ...... fussy chicks ! |

My runners are suffering too. They're cropping well, I grow the white flowered sort, but I've lost 3 plants today because of the wind.
Fed up with rasps so have left them for the birds. Beets are good, but carrots are diddly. Pots are getting a lot of slug damage now and the onions look good but seem hard and dry. Lots of lettuces haven't hearted up but are fine for tortoise food
Not a good veg year. BUT, I grow a lot of flowers for the house in my veg garden and they have done brilliant without any extra watering Seems it not us but the weather. Thats my excuse anyway.
Always next year
Oh, and my tomatoes have only just started to ripen which seems a bit bizarre after the weather we've had. |

Plenty (well, I know of 3 off the top of my head!) of folk have apple trees here in Shetland. All inside though - either in polytunnels, or byres that have been re-roofed with clear plastic corrugated. As of next year there will be at least 4, as I shall be planting one myself in my splendid new glasshouse, to grow as an espalier up the back wall.
Don't know if anyone has tried plums here - there would be space for a Victoria in the glasshouse too, and I loooove them... May just have to try one and see.
Am v proud of the glasshouse - built from scratch by little ol' me in July. Will post a photo / spec if anyone's interested in a northern isles stormproof glasshouse!

Yes please, I'd love to see it. We're on a very windy west Cumbrian fellside, 600ft up so I thought fruit trees were out for me ....... but now you're giving me ideas |

| There are people growing plums under cover here - I've seen them in the 'grown under glass' section of the shows. Have a look for ideas when you go. |

I'd love to see your glass house Attila.
Victoria plums are my most favourite fruit of all. 5 years ago I planted one in my veg garden and Its turned out to be a peach but I have got 6 little peaches on it this year. |

I'll take some photos this weekend everyone. Well, on Sunday - tomorrow is Voe Show day, and I'll be there all day looking enviously at Jaydee's beautiful hens!

Craig is the majority shareholder in our hens at the moment - just as well I hatched plenty this year - can't have him taking over! Especially as I have to do most of the cleaning out! He is in the process of setting up a bantam empire I think - next year's show will have more entries from him. Don't look too closely at the ducks, they've been moulting but Craig still wants to enter them! |

| And what a beautiful apple it is, especially with the rain drops on it. What type is it? |
