As you don't need to register flocks of under 50 birds Defra don't know how many households keep chickens. Defra vets will now be going house-to-house within the surveillance zone around Dereham trying to find out where there may be chickens! So, even if you don't register they'll still find you, although a lot more manpower & time will be wasted doing this.

Perhaps it is better to register to avoid the Government wasting money that could be better spent? We still haven't decided whether to register our 48 birds yet, but Avian Flu is getting closer to home (we're in Cambridgeshire).

Has anyone else seen the new legislation that came into force the other day?

Quote:
The Avian Influenza and Influenza of Avian Origin in Mammals (England) Order 2006 came into force on 27 April 2006. It implements the majority of the requirements of Council Directive 2005/94/EC on the control of avian influenza. It replaces the Diseases of Poultry (England) Order 2003 as far as it relates to avian influenza. The new Order has been made before the end of the consultation period because avian influenza virus was found in poultry in Norfolk on 26 April 2006.

Personally I don't think 1 km exclusion zone is enough. I'm glad I got my lot under cover last month.
