My landlady had defra down to inspect her cattle and they wanted her to register our poultry on her paperwork. She refused saying they were ours. They felt that because we rent from her that she is still responsible. She still refused, the birds are in our garden, not on her agricultural land and they would have to see us. They didn't come and see us, but they know where we are now.
Our chickens are now in a completely covered run, does that mean that defra can still get them? |

I don't think it's in black and white anywhere. But the general thought is that if there is a problem with the avian flu ~ not just the odd dead swan ~ and DEFRA decide to cull ~ then it really won't matter to them whether your birds are inside or not.
We could be being cynical of course ~ but they sort of have a history ....... |

I try to say positive about all this, but I agree with Summayah, if Avian Flu gets here, then there will be culling and I honestly don't believe that birds being undercover will make any difference.
That said, I do have my contingency plans to pen then and cover them should it be necessary. |

| the problem here is there is a 500 quid fine if the police or council find chickens free ranging..with no appeal .....now all my neibours are free ranging theirs but who do you think they will make an example of if i let mine out.bet it aint my neibour |

i don't know who in here reads the smallholder there is an articale in there about a man in gemany he'd got his geese 26 years ago and they had lived on an island ever since ,including his 26 year old goose that he had first  ,because they couldn't be housed they were more or less wild they were culled it's sad ,the bloke housed his ducks and hens but just felt he couldn't do it to his geese didn't have room nobody else wanted to take them so they went  ,but germany has had over 30 cases ,the smallholder comes out very pro vacinne ,lots of interesting stuff written by a vet ,don't normally get it but it looked good this month
