I cant believe it, but today I have bought my very own Highland bull.
He is everything I wanted, nice temperament, black, hes five so he knows the job and has produced some lovely calves.
Now I don't have to mess about with AI anymore. HOORAY
Not the best pic I know, but it was pouring with rain. I'll take some more when he comes home.

suz, tell nonie she can have pics of his hooves and any other bits when he comes home. He has to have a premovement TB test before we can move him and our annual test is due so we are getting that out of the way first.
He seems a very nice old boy and has a lovely head which doesn't show in my awful pic. Will try harder.
CP & jooles, there are lots of colours, red being the one that people think of them being. I would love a fold of mixed colours, but unless I win the lottery I'm probably too old now to achieve it, and OH tells me I would have to buy a ticket to win, so that lets me out.
The old print below was made in 1885 from a painting done in the 1850's-sorry about ceiling reflection- and shows some of the colours.

| Well fancy that! I wonder why it is that the red ones are more common. I like the cream one too. What would be the colour of the offspring from a black bull and a red cow then? |

Hi jooles,
Red is dominant over black, but a lot depends on the colour in their breeding. Bonnie Girl below has a red mother and a black father but as there is a lot of black in the breeding on both sides I think she will turn black as she ages, and she has a black mouth and tongue. She is 5 weeks old here and a little beauty.
