I don't know if anyone else saw it, but I thought the BBC news coverage this morning was really rather pro vaccination (or at least the choice to vaccinate). Nice to see something potentially good (IMHO) come out of the media coverage for once...

But they still haven't said what breed of swan it was - one likely to have come from the Baltic or a home grown mute swan - that may have more serious implications for us.

Fingers & pretty much everything else crossed - and will take a days holiday tomorrow to finalize the bird flu proofing of our run - have all the stuff sitting in the outhouse.

Good Luck to everyone on the east coast of Scotland

Hi ye all,

same here, awaiting news eagerly (we're on the east coast, on the southern end of Aberdeenshire...). Seems to be confirmed as H5 (i.e. certainly a highly pathogenic AI) but they're still testing for the strain (i.e. the N part). Birds are out for today in a fenced run but will finish their covered run tonight just in case....
Anyone know any more about the type of swan it was yet?

Good luck to all of you!

As Mr Mannering would say "don't panic, don't panic"!!

The BBC site seems to have more info than DEFRA at this time. I just caught it on the telly and thought I would break my vow of poultry keeper silence to come and see if there was any more on here.
BBC link here:
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4881850.stm

Our thoughts are with everyone 'up there' and of course we are worrying here too. It was only a matetr of time and I think we had all grown a little complacant lately with the lack of media hysteria.

We surely must all now make contingency plans for getting our birds under cover if we have to and perhaps press our MP's for vaccination?

I doubt anyone here will be doing daft things like dumping or getting rid of their chickens but no doubt some will.
The last lot of hysteria got me my show winning welsummer bantams at £2 a piece from someone frantically offloading.

Stay calm and watch the news and prepare to batten down the hatches, but above all, don't panic.

Just reading the latest on the BBC & I saw this piece of info:-
Quote:
the bird was found eight days ago.

How come it's taken so long to hit the news this time? And surely it's been long enough to find out if it is the H5N1 strain already? Confused I thought it only took a few days for the results? That's the impression I had anyway. Embarassed

CP - I wondered that as well, why it's taken so long to announce it and test for H5N1??? Confused

I thought the BBC item this morning was quite good - gave a lot of credence to the idea of vaccinating and showed how the Dutch are dealing with it without a mass panic. Bet it doesn't happen that calmly over here Rolling Eyes

Seaside Landlady - how are you today? The 'other' site's down, so I can't catch up with you over there! Very Happy
