| I've just found an egg that must have been laid today out in the run rather than in a nest box - it's strange in that the shell isn't hard - it's soft and squidgy - I'm not sure who has laid it - or even what it's like inside - bit wary of trying to open it actually!! I guess things like this do just happen every now and then and that's it's nothing to be particularly concerned about - is that right? Don't suppose it could be a first egg from my as yet unlaying black rock could it? I'd expected first eggs to be tiny things rather than soft and squidy ones. Helen |

Yes it's very likely to be a 'first egg' - it sometimes takes a while for the egg laying machinery to get going in a new layer. It will be normal inside - just lacking the shell. The fact that it was laid in the run points to a bird just getting the hang of being a 'grown-up' laying bird. I expect she just got caught short, as it were  |

| I agree with Diane. First eggs might be a little smaller than what is normal for the hen, but usually they're not like bantam sized from a large fowl. |

| Initially it looked as if the 'oddie' was the only egg laid today but I've since found where hubbie put the 3 he collected (don't quite know why he can't put them where the children and I put them!!) so I'm also inclined to think this is a first - how exciting. I did wonder whether because the brs are the bottom of the pecking order whether she didn't feel able (or allowed) into the coop to lay in a box. I've opened it and as Diane says it's normal - just. It was 48g. Oh my, 4 laying now - what shall I do with all those eggs! Girls are baking tonight for cakes sales tomorrow at school and I feel egg and cress sarnies coming on for lunch boxes. Thanks again for your help. |
