| Just thought I'd post a quick update to let you know how I'm getting on with my first ever birds - which we got on Sat 18th (Mar). Initially I was concerned about my rather timid black rocks and have since been posting about setting up a bigger, fixed run and house for them - despite what is said about arcs my view is that they aren't really moveable cos they're so damn heavy!! Anyway the girls seem to have settled in really well now. The blackrocks are no longer spending most of their time in the coop - yes they're bottom of the pecking order and yes the others still have the occassional 'nag' at them - but it's great to see them all out in their run. Only 3 of the 5 are laying at the moment and so far in 9 days we've collected 23 eggs which we all think is brill. We're weighing the eggs and it's fun to see how much they vary - our average is about 63-65g, but we've had one (from a bluebelle) that topped 70g, and the smallest one was 56g. I'm looking forward to the br's starting to lay - one is a bit older than the other because she has a comb and the other just had a few pinky spikes!! I'll try to persuade hubby to take his new digital camera out this evening (if the weather stays dry) to take a few piccies of them - it would be great if anyone could give me an idea of how old they think the youngest black rock might be. Anyway thanks for all the help that has been given so far in response to my various naive postings. Helen |
