I know this thread has gone slightly askew from the original question - which was can you hold a full time job and keep cattle as well, well I work as an agricultural contractor - mostly with cattle and quite a few of my customers are what I call "part time farmers". Their cattle are as well looked after as any others, one man had 50 Charollais cows + calves and growers - he had a wife as well, which was useful, sorry Knobby I don't know your situation, you probably only fancy a couple anyway, but yes it can be done - electric light is useful on dark evenings! Laughing

It's totally possible to have livestock and a job, as long as you're prepared to get up early and be tired all the time...

I leave home at 7 so I'm up at 6 to get everything fed before I go, and i get back at 8 which is totally miserable in winter but not so bad now.

The only reason i dont have cows or anything is because I dont fancy getting up even earlier, I'm the kind of person who needs ten hours sleep a night (a boring sod!)

When i can drive though (soon) I won't have to leave until 8.30 and I'll be home at 7...so who knows!!!???

over here in nearly every village there is one or two big full time farms and the rest are partimers...1 is a postie,1 works in a logging concession,1 is a butcher(but he aint got cattle),1 a teacher and that is just in our hamlet oooh and of course there are the retired interlopers keeping chickens..thats us

Commuting sucks bigtime, 3 hrs to get to work in the morning, but it gives me the money to do everything I want (well, not quite, but I can save up for my acreage Very Happy

It's only 40 miles but its the traffic - murder in the morning, 3 hrs, but only 11/2 home? By car it'd only be 11/2 in the morn and 40mins-1hr in the evenings but i cant drive just yet, will be going for test v soon though! I'd love to give it all up for sure, i never thought I'd let myself get into that situation but i get paid so good it'd be really hard to give that up. not that i have an extravagant lifestyle or shop at amrks and sparks - i dont know where it goes!

Oh yes I do...chickens!!!!!
