Was all set to play earlier when hubby decided he had time to come with me and gather stuff for my raised beds. Making them lasagne style - layers of different organic materials which you can plant up while it is decomposing. So far we have wet newspaper - to kill the grass, rabbit hutch cleanings, hen house cleanings - been stored in feed bags in teh rain and was stinking! then a layer of composted garden waste mixed with hen house cleanings. got seaweed and peat tonight. Need some grass clippings - good for heaping up the tatties! Tried this for the first time last year with good results - and no digging!

Look for hte book Lasagne Gardening on Amazon.

Do you box the layers in or just leave them in a pile?

Is this the same thing as square foot gardening? that relies on layers of organic matter and has no digging.

For anyone interested in Lasagne/Square Foot Gardening

the Organic Garden has a forum which you may find helpful (they use phpBB forums just like The Poultry Keeper so you should feel at home)

I've ordered the book but it won't be here for 2 weeks.
I take it its newspaper on the bottom then layers of assorted muck.
How deep does each layer have to be?
The OH doesn't know it yet but he's going to block off a square with old breeze blocks, so I need to now how high to make it.
hope this makes sense
Thanks

They recommend about 18 inches high deb, mine aren't that high - but I heaped it a bit in the middle. Was wondering if I should get my hubby to add an extra bit of height. .....

Yes to the layer of wet newspaper then layers of asstd muck. newspaper kills of what's already there. In the book they don't use edging - but I thought I would need to.
