We had exactly the same problem Nursie and it was so traumatic. When our two terrors were only nine months old, we were enjoying a walk in a local forest when we heard a load of shouting. Next thing we were being attacked by a "pit bull type" (sorry but I don't know how else to describe it as it was definitely some kind of cross). I managed to haul our two (on the lead and under control) above my head has hubby fended of the dog. The owner came running up and started beating his dog, so hubby had to intervene to stop him (and got bitten for his trouble). A very, very traumatic day and our two still panic when another dog runs towards them - trouble is they are scarred now and make such a racket it's embarrassing!

I couldn't stop thinking "what if". What if it had been my MIL with her spaniel? What if it has been friends with two giant beasties that couldn't be lifted out of the way and with two kids too? What if our's had been off the lead? OMG, it doesn't bear thinking about Sad !

It makes me so flipping mad when stuff like this happens. Sadly the 'types' who keep staffies, rotties and like generally have a lower IQ than the dog and the kind of names they choose tell you why they got that breed, I mean 'tyson', 'satan' and the like .
Some breeds simply don't deserve the kind of people who own them. I would like a rottie after Harley dies but will ensure that he knows how to mind his manners and will be socialised properly with humans and animals. His name will be.................'Jesus' Laughing

i'm really sorry this happened to you
it must have really shaken you up
not all farmers shoot immedently normally up here the dog is caugh returned to owner ,the inciedent is then reported to the police so that they have a crime number ,the owner is then presented with a bill for damage no second warning is given
we had a local chap when i lived in portsmouth who had a jack russel
he used to let the dog out in the front garden and it often eascaped ,
my daughter was sitting with her pet rat on her knee when my other daughter walked in with the jack as somebody over the park had given it to her as they knew that i ran the local dog training club,
i was in the bath
the next thing i knew there were screams coming from down stairs ,jumped out of the bath to see my daughter trying to grab her pet rat off this bloody dog ,grabbed the collar and got it off ,the rat needed a leg aputated ,there was blood all over the front room the bill £130 which i felt i had to pay as my daughter had brought the dog home to stop it fighting another dog in the park, everytime after that the dog went straight to the police station ,he was rehomed after the man having to keep paying for it Rolling Eyes ,report it ,the dangous dogs act does not mean a dog has to attack before sometings done it is enough to be threated by the dog

disaster. got 8 ex-batts on saturday. on sunday neigbbours terrier (NOT same dog as before, but dog of good friends next door) got into shed and got one of them. poor girl - only 1 day of freedom, and he broke her neck. i cradled her in my arms as she died. Crying or Very sad

neighbour distraught and offered to put dog down, but we have reinforced shed and hope problem will not recur.

bloomin bad luck though - 2 chicken-mad hounds close by. Confused

now you may not agree with what happened next, but after some discussion we agreed that as part of our downsizing it would be wrong to throw her away - so OH plucked and prepared her for dinner. Shocked

Blimey - you haven't had a lot of luck! Crying or Very sad
Well done for dealing the way you did though - i think it takes a special person to rationalise and deal like that.

It certainly is painful dealing with situations like that. Unless a dog is socialised with chickens as a puppy - especially under 12 weeks of age then there is a fair chance it won't see the chook as your pet... if they are however they will see chickens as part of their family.

My chooks are in a dog proof run - I learnt the hard way unfortunately and the gate is double latched to make sure my daughter doesn't open the gate for the dog when I'm not around...

If your neighbour has an open boundary that they can't easily fence, it may be worth making them aware of the electronic fences you can get. I think there's one made by master plus - it's a collar that squirts the dog with citronella every time they go to cross a certain 'line' after a while the dog learns not to go as far as that line. It sure beats them putting the dog on a chain and going mad.

I think everyone else has summed up the warning and Police / dog warden route.

Good Luck, sounds like you could do with a bit of it now!

That's awful, had trouble a few years back with a dog from hell, killed all the local cats including mine that left behind a very young litter of kittens for us to hand rear. I think you will find that the owner will have to pay for any loss, injury or damage by law...not that this helps your distress. all the best and kick hard if needs be!!
