Hi I agree with the views from NannyP and poultrypoofs. There is so much info and mis-info about that it is easy to get worked up into a frenzy. On a number of forums this seems to be happening a lot. I like to keep a general eye on the news so I don't miss any orders to put the birds under cover etc.

Poultry keeping is a small but important part of my life. I may be in the minority as I am not a big commercial nor am I a pet chicken keeper. My birds are livestock even if they are kept in the garden. I would be sorry to see them culled if it ever came to it, but nowhere near as sorry as if people I knew died from AI. Hopefully we are a very long way from that point.

On a day-to-day basis I have bigger more pressing things to spend my time fretting over. I realise that for others their poultry are the BIG thing, and I respect them for that. It must be very difficult times.

Just my point of view.

I can't remember where I read about the vaccination thing. The one that I read seem to say that the vaccination would hide the symtoms, but the birds could still be carriers of the virus. I wonder why the other EU countries are bothering to vaccinate now, if that is the case. There must be more than one type available. But I did read on another link on here that the governement would rather circle and cull than vaccinate.
Sorry I can't help you Morgan other than to suggest you go through all the posts with links in this section. I would work backwards if it were me, as the position is changing all the time.

Ask yourself this. If bird flu vaccines will only hide the symptoms aand allow the birds to be carriers, why is this not the case with human flu vaccines? Am I really walking about with flu, infecting others even though I was vaccinated last Autumn?
I really believe that this government has put this info out or told scientists to pyut this out as fact simply because to do otherwise would land them in the brown stuff? It is well known that the government have no stocks of vaccine, nnor have they ordered any. They have zero intentions of allowing anyone to vaccinate and it makes sense to provide Joe Public with so called 'evidence' as to why vaccinating is a waste of time. It is not in their interest for anyone to say that the vaccine is effective because poultry keepers would demand it and that would muck up the broiler fowl trade and chicken exports. That is what the government is concerned with, simply £££ against poultry welfare and the £££ will win every time.

considering that eu vets are now saying that h5n1 is likely to be almost impossible to eradicate, due to being in a non-controllable wild bird population, then, the long term outlook for ever allowing birds outside without vaccination is bleak indeed.........even if defra managed to "cull its way out of an outbreak", the chances are , every migration time/bad spell of weather over europe, would likely see us reinfected, especially from some eastern european countries that do not have the resources to manage outbreaks as easily as richer western e.u memebers can...........this is precisely whats happening now. Sad
saying the vaccines would mask the symptoms, allowing chooks to keep shedding and spreading the virus, is dubious to say the least.............this should count out most vaccinations against viruses then surely??
wasnt long ago, defra were saying it would be impossible to tell which had anti bodies to the vaccine, and which to real flu..........they are quiet on that now, as it was pointed out that marker vaccines are readily availble for just this scenario............i agree with fenwomen on this, that its totally about money...........dress it up all they want..........uk govnt/defra will still be saying this "it doesnt work/it will ruin our markets" mantra, when the rest of europe has finally vaccinated..........and kept trading...............we of course, knowing better than everyone, can cull our way out of it!!! Evil or Very Mad

the main thing I learnt is that the 'experts' don't read their own legislation and don't have a clue what they are on about

that they are only testing swans no other breeds
