I would like to buy 2 really BIG girls. They dont need to be good egg layers, but they do need to be, BIG, hardy, docile, friendly and mix with the other girls, L/F and banties. They would free range through the cattle barns and yard so would have plenty of shelter from bad weather but I think because of muck and mud, leg feathers are a non starter. Im thinking of Dorkings, I like their flopped over old fashioned combs but Ive only had my books to go on. Going to the DTB next week for a look round. Anyone got any ideas and suggestions of breeds to look out for?
Thanks

Hi jan, I really like my Australorpes they are fantastically friendly and laid back. There are pictures under my name (Isabel Long) in the gallery - Milly and Gertie. They are bigger than the picture would suggest as the grass was very long when it was taken.

When I was originally looking I too wanted Dorkings, but was put off as I read they weren't quite as hardy, mud wise, as some other breeds. And I understood they were a bit short in the leg, compared to some others too - ie not quite as big?

So personally I'd go for one of the other suggestions...

Orpingtons. They seem to be as large as my cochins and look very similar but no leg featehrs. My friends orpington cockerels stand a good 24" tall.

Ixworth? www.britchickens.bravehost.com/ixworth.html they're a hefty table breed and in need of a boost in numbers

Or, orpingtons http://www.bufforpington.co.uk/ these are your hardy utility strain, not the fluffy show type.

Very Happy
