I recall seeing on PP a long time ago...a discussion about inc temp and the sex of the hatchlings (is that a word?) i.e. one temp makes girls, a diff temp makes boys....ive done a search but cant find anything (deleted perhaps) or was i imagining it ? Confused

Anyone got any theories ???

I remember something to that affect also. I believe it was Henwife who produced that information. You could see if she has an email left listed on PP. Confused

It is certainly true of some species that temp etc can determine the the gender of the offspring and some things like frogs can actually change gender later in life.

But I have no idea if it works with chicken eggs.

However, I was chatting to my neighbour last night, and he says he once (about 3 years ago) go some hatching eggs and the seller asked if he wanted coq or hens, he said he wanted hens.
the seller then candled them and gave him 12 eggs which all turned out to be female.
So perhaps it is possible to tell the sex before you set the eggs?

No idea what you would look for, but it would be good if it worked

All the best

Yes, but wasn't that also due to the shape of the tip of the egg? Or is that an old wives tale? I think I remember something to that effect in the same thread. Confused

I have done a search on this before and nothing concrete to go on...lots of ideas and old wives tales....the temp works for reptiles but doesn't seem to for hens.

There is the thing about shape of egg - more rounded for a girl and pointy for a boy (or was it the other way round..lol) but the site said it wasn't very accurate.

I am sure there must be some outside factor but as yet not been found.

(there was someone who had done the needle test on her eggs and was setting them 1.4.05 but can't remember who it was!)

thats right GIna - it was lilly-the-pink! I did the same thing, on most eggs, the needle didnt move - which means infertile - 10 after setting the eggs, I candled them and they were all infertile - clever or what Mad Shame I didnt candle them BEFORE I bought them, would have saved me a fortune!!
