Hi Folks...need some help & advice.
My Peafowl have been out of their familiarisation pen (stayed in there for about 2-3 months) for about 2 weeks now. I let the Peacock out first and then the hen a week later.
The first 2 weeks they have stayed in the garden and not wandered off at all; until yesterday when they went walkabout in the neighbourhood. They could have safely chosen the woods at the back of my grounds or the fields to the right without any problem, but instead wandered off into folks gardens having crossed the road to do so.
What concerns me most is that they seemed to show no signs of wanting to return. I had expected them to wander and over some distance, but I had understood that once imprinted on their area (my garden/grounds) they would return especially when hungry.
I was able to catch the indignant birds eventually and have returned them to their wired enclosure for another week.
Am I just unduly panicking and would they have returned of their own accord ??
Any hints on keeping them local to the grounds ?? |

What time did you go and "fetch them" was it already dark....or still quite light ???
The only way youll ever be sure of them not wondering off, is if you confine them to a garden. |

portsmonth prison had a couple they escaped and spent a few weeks wondering all over the local area

It was still light, around 1600 hours. I just didn't want to risk them either not returning at all or crossing the road and being hit.
They are safely back in their pen at the moment; I plan to let her out at the weekend and keep him in for another week, to settle them down again.
I am also going to get into the habit of blowing a whistle at treat time (digestive biscuits). That way if they have gone off into the distance I stand a chance of getting them to return under their own steam. |

That's a good idea - Pavlov's dogs experiment. 
My chooks are trained to come running at the sight & sound of clinking porridge bowls! 
I don't know anything about peacocks except they are very beautiful & very loud.
I hope you manage to keep them local & not wandering off.

Lol i seem to remember a prison having owls escape too! People used to dump them near us until they kept getting hit by trains! |

Will & Grace are Indian Blues; although they are still too young to have developed their glorious feathers. That said they both have coloured neck feathers already. he won't develop his train until next year or even the year after and apparently they don't reach full length for 5 years...so a patient wait.
That's if they stay with me long enough to see it  |
