I've been burying my head in the sand a bit over this AI, so forgive me if this has been asked before.

If the worst happens will we be allowed to cull our own birds, and if the answer is no what will happen to us if we do.
I wont let them put my girls into plastic sacks to suffocate.

most folk i know are hoping if the worst case scenario happens that they can cull their chooks themselves...........after foot and mouth here, and seeing all these poor birds abroad being buried and burned alive, we all want to avoid that...............god help anyone who cant kill their own chooks..............mabye time to learn...........after all, surely better to end their life painlessly than let strangers who may not know how to, to possibly cause them suffering. Crying or Very sad

Totally agree Kittoch. There's no way Defra are torturing my chickens! If the worst happens, hubby gets the job and we will face the consequences.

I don't think I could bear some ham fisted bureaucrat coming here and murdering my ladies Crying or Very sad

It would break my heart, but if the worst comes to the worst then it will be a case of sending the dearly beloved out to see to it for me. I know I couldn't do it myself.

Let's just keep on hoping it does not come to that Confused

If the worst comes to the worst, I have a friend who will do it for me. She did 3 cockerels late last year and she was good with them, talking to then and calming them Confused

I agree, even though it would break my heart all my ladies will be dead before Defra gets here if there is a mass cull. It is as Mojo says, the price for keeping chickens.

I feel the same way too, but I've never killed a chicken (any animal) before.

How would you do it?

the best way is to watch someone else who knows what he is doing first(or she) i personally do it by hand, stroke the bird till absolute ly calm then snap neck in one quick pull..........mojo
