I am starting my own chicken company (www.britchickens.bravehost.com) Very Happy , specialising in rare british breeds, as the name suggests, and I'm particularly interested in marsh daisies because they originated here in lancashire so it was obvious i needed some. i thought it'd be really difficult to locate breeders but I've found about 5 who advertise and possibly 7 more who are just 'private' breeders. Whilst I've found more breeders than I expected to I'm still disappointed they are all so closely related (the birds, not the breeders!). nothing you can do about the inbreeding though, apart from breed in other breeds, which is a whole can of worms really. I wont be doing it!!!

Perhaps you could tell me the secret you have as its took us 3 years to track down sources of proper marsh Daisy's.Most are exceptionally poor specimens no more Marsh Daisy than I am.I know of about 4 decent flocks in the country.
Unfortunately

"apart form breed in other breeds, which is a whole can of worms really",

is exactly what a lot of people did to try and regenerate the Marsh Daisy mainly for financial reasons and resulted in some appalling birds those have been allowed to breed too instead of culling them or not breeding from them so the gene pool is a mess.
We acquired some 'show winning birds' last year which were dreadful specimens and only won in the show because they were the only rare breed entry. The only reason we acquired them was because the colours and basic characteristics of the Marsh Daisy were there and I know we can eventually bring the offspring back to looking how Marsh Daisy's should.
We also have Sicilian Buttercups which no longer exist in sicily which were part of the makeup of the Marsh Daisy and equally its very hard to track down owners of those.
good luck with your project at least someone is keen to do something to help the rare breeds.

Well, i ahvent laid eyes on the birds these breeders keep yet but i can only do my best with what we've got left of them. I'll be upset if the breed just fades away because the damage has been done already...

We have 2 unrelated cockerels one brown one wheaten and in total 3 unrelated strains 15 birds in all, we had 30 birds last year sold or culled 12 birds not suitable for breeding lost 3 to a fox attack and about to start breeding ours this year.We hope to get the numbers up to a better flock number to safeguard against disasters this year. We're always looking for more Marsh Daisy's though to improve our gene pool.Be glad to help when we have more of our own bred.We hatched the first one this morning so its a start Laughing
