| Our Araucana went into moult at the end of last summer, and two weeks ago laid her first egg since. But then - nothing! I didn't really think anything of it as this is the first time I've had large birds go through the moult & didn't really know what to expect; my Pekins always just shut up shop on the laying front from the end of December until mid-February even if they never lost a single feather! But now the Marans and Faverolles have come back into lay and are laying every day without a pause - which makes me wonder whether the Araucana is all right? She was a really good layer all through last season. She doesn't seem unwell in any way, apart from a touch of scaley leg mite which they've all been treated for. Is it unusual, or nothing to worry about? I wasn't worried about her until the others started churning them out again... |

My Marans didnt lay for almost a year, then all of a sudden 4 weeks ago....They started laying again !!!
I guess as long as she looks healthy and seems ok, dont panic too much !  |

Ethel, my Maran, hasn't laid for the past three weeks!! I hope its not a sign of her egging off! I want to bake a cake and dont have enough eggs...............might have to get some more chickens! |

| It's often during these shorter daylight hours that hens stop laying for a while. An old wive's tale suggests that they stop on Nov 5th and start again on Feb 14th. My younger (1st season) hens have continued to lay during this period, and some of the older ones have started to lay again. As others have said, if she seems okay and is eating and drinking happily, she's probably having a break. |

| Thanks, everyone - of course, no sooner did I post, than she settled back into lay again, and today the last of my big girls joined her with a beautiful pearly-white Hamburgh offering. So their beautiful multi-coloured eggs are amazing the neighbours once again... As the icing on the cake, my two youngest accidental Pekin-Wyandotte babies are coming into lay now; one laid the biggest "first" egg I've ever seen this morning, despite being a tiny scrap of a bird. And their older "sisters" have laid like crazy clear through the darkest days. Now I'm glad the people who were going to take them on got cold feet... |
