Hi Jan, Not to give you any ideas or anything but there is a little Dexter advertised on www.dextercattleforsale.co.uk free to a good home as a pet due to a farm sale and the fact that she is barren. When is your grandsons birthday? |

Hi Jan, Go to - Cattle for sale - Heifers up to 3 years - Black - Pikeend Alicote (York). I suggested her tongue in cheek as she is in Yorkshire, but she is free so may be worth a trip. |

Thanks Issy, did find her but OH says NO. Its the winter housing that makes it difficult. My Highlands outwinter and prefer it.
What an excellent web site you have for Dexters, really good 'For sale' bit, and the discussion board is used a lot. I like that.
The Highland web site has a forum thats like watching paint dry.
I think there were only 8 post in the whole of last year, yet some of the topics have hundred of views but no one answers the questions. They all seem very afraid of sharing their expertise.
If you get a spare moment, have a look and you'll see what I mean.www.highlandcattlesociety.com

Hi Jan, Yep the site is a good one isn't it. It is brilliant for newcomers to keeping cows like me .
The picture of your highlands is very impressive they are fantastic creatures.(I will have a look at the site)
Shame about little Ali, but it is a long way to go for something that is extra work. |

i just wonder if i could ask a question izzy or anyone else
somebody i know has a goat that they mated very young when she had the kids her udder did not devlop
if you mated a cow early might it's udder not develop
is it an age thing or just one of those things that happen in cattle as well

| Hi Milkmaid, I am probably not the best person to answer this as I don't know much about goats but all animals mature at different rates and certainly the advice I received from other Dexter owners was not to leave it much after 16 months to start breeding from them as they are mature then and tend to get fat if left which causes all sorts of problems whereas a friend keeping Welsh Black cattle wouldn't dream of covering her girls until they were 24 months. I don't know much about udder development apart from the fact that my girlie who has just lost her calf at 5 months had started to develop in that area. |

thanks for that ,i was just wondering if it might be age related
and if it would apply in cattle ,probably not then ,the goat in question was very young and i was wondering if that was the problem ,
it's not my goat mine are still to young and will be covered next year
mind you i'm looking forard to my shetland coming ,

| Me too! I tried to convince my OH to get a Highland, but said no way, get gored by those horns! Shelties will do... and the Dexters... so cute, but he said no... |
