Ok so I have just added the flubenvet that Belinda kindly gave me to the girls' food - well mixed in! do I still add the garlic powder as normal or is it best just to have flubenvet only???

TIA

AFAIK they work in different ways, so I personally wouldn't have a problem with using both...

IIRC the drug in Flubenvet actually kill worms, whereas garlic makes the internal conditions less favourable to internal parasites which, over time, either gets rid of them or at least gets them down to an acceptable level.

Plus garlic has so many other beneficial properties that I'd continue feeding it to them because of that!

HTH,
Lis

The dosage advice on Flubenvet recommends you worm birds twice a year, but our vet told us that since our birds are not moved to fresh groung every 3 months we should aim to worm them every 3 months as a precaution. We use the pre mixed feed already dosed with wormer as it is far simpler and a lot less mixing and messing.

there's also a totally natural wormer that you can get, which is much better than flubenvet in that it is natural and also it is dispensed in measured doses ~ verm-x. Here is their web site www.verm-x.com. It was also for sale on ebay recently but it seems all the auctions have gone off ~ I expect they'll pop back on again. I've never used this but I no someone who has and she was very impressed with it.

It's layers pelletts that already has flubenvet mixed with it. It's easier to mix in large quantities, so some manufacturers do it for you. We buy it by the kilo from a local country store.

Our feed supplier sells layers pellets already dosed with the correct amount of flubenvet, they also sells it loose, so we don't have to buy a large sack.

I Believe as do many of my chicken friends, that you should use about 3 different types of wormers when worming.Rotate the use of the 3 wormers.Use one ,one time the next time use another type and a different one for the third worming, then start over with the first wormer.
Remember only worm every 3-4 months

Don't forget you can sprinkle Diatom into their food and over their bedding, this is natural and will worm as well as keep nasties away from the house. I still use it regularly on our girls.

I am a non believer in these 'natural' products for worming. Having used them on dogs and cats in the past to no effect. I would be very interested if someone used diatom, garlic powder etc for a year and then took a sample to the vet for a worem count to see if they really do work. Personally flubenvet is cheap and effective and I knowthat they will be worm free.
BTW are you aware that giving garlic powder can be dangerous to some animls like cats and dogs? It can cause haemolitic amaemia. See here:

So those of you who have dogs and cats, keep the garlic powder away from them.
