Thanks for the replies including Knobby's. It was very kind of you to look up that information for me. It was very useful. I bought the seeds and a couple of growbags and I shall stash them on top of my piles of bedding Knobby Smile that should be high enough. I will let you know when I eat my first lettuce sandwich.

My step father can't bend to tend a garden any more so last year we went over on his birthday with 4 fence posts, a pallet and 2 grow bags. The fence posts went into the ground so that the pallet would sitt on top upside down at working height. The grow bags fitted between the bits on the bottom of the pallet and couldn't slide. He grew salad crops easily without bending or many pests.

Thanks for that jaydee. I have planted the seed now in one of the growbags and I shall use the other to thin them out. If they grow that is. I don't have very green fingers. I have never been at home all day before so I couldn't really tend to growing things so maybe this year will be more successful. My runner bean plants are doing well so far. I have them in pots on a raised area. Had to flick a slug off there this morning. You can't win can you. If they were in the ground the chickens would see to the slugs unfortunately if they were in the ground the chickens would eat the plants aswell. Does anyone else manage runner beans and chickens in the same space?
