In Sweden they have a breed native to the south called the Skånegås (Skane Goose). They are related the the Buff and Grey Backed varieties we have here. Anyone with any comments on temperament and knowledge of these varieties ?
Here's what the Nordic Gene Bank (their equivalent of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust) says about them
| Quote: | The colour of the feather is parti-coloured, white with brown-grey stripes at head, neck, back and thigh. Even the feathers at the tail are partial brown-grey. The feathers at the wings are solid white. The root of the beak is normally solid white. The size of the dark markings varies, but breed pure solid white or solid brown-grey animals don’t occur. Weight: 6,5-8,0 kg (female) and 7,0-11,0 kg (male). This is an improved breed of landrace. Animals of this breed are relative large and easy to feed. Traditionally, the skåne goose is used as sires in meat production of goose. Average hatch percent is 28 %. Because of the huge weight on these animals, they often spoil their own eggs during the brood period.
20-30 eggs/ year, 20-220 g/ egg. |
