in our local paper today ALL poultry to be kept indoors till further notice..and this is a free range farming zone ...i see problems ahead.....will the french farmers agree or will they go their own way............... will keep you posted.......mojo Sad

tricia and i are thinking it thro..... think we will cage coqs in sep cages then all the chooks can live together in small barn....only prob think ducks will have to go to freezerland as havnt a barn for them.........its a worry as you can guess going to talk to the locals next week and see what they say .....will keep you posted................cant see the commercials obaying .........their birds live in huge paddocks with curigatted sheeting leantoos to keep off the worst of the weather ...all sent to try us....luv mojo

A bit worrying to think that France is now going to house their poultry. It's getting that bit closer to home! home

I wonder if our government will act sooner rather than later on this?

We are going to hurry along with our contingency plans, just in case the order is given. Confused

I have an ark with roosting upstairs. Would this be sufficient to keep my four hens inside long term? Currently they roam around and wreck most of my garden!! They grizzle like mad when I dont let them out, if I have to go out for the day, for example. Also, the weather proofing to the run bit isnt too good, as it's just open chicken wire. I want to buy a shed, but the space isnt at all ready.

I believe the idea is to keep wild birds from contaminating the chickens food & water. So chicken wire will not keep out the smaller birds.

It's also suggested there should be a solid roof to prevent the wild bird poo from dropping into the chickens area for the same reason.

It's not going to be nice for our girls if they have to be contained. Sad

They are so used to being outside & as soon as we get home they are waiting at the gate to be let into the rest of the garden.

right here goes rules to be applied now as i undestand them if you know differant post NOW.........................all runs to have total roof cover ie plastic sheets ,tarps etc....(if not possible all birds to be housed.).....where possible the material to come over edges of roof by 12 inchs...30 cm.................wire mesh to be CHICK proof not chicken proof to keep out small migratory birds...............all food and water dishes to have covers and to be sited indoors..............in event of flu arriving in france ...all birds to keep inside at all times......no access to birds by anyone bar owners....disinfectant boot washes at all entrances..not just hen runs all entrances to properties........no movement of birds..further news as i find it ..............mojo......

me again.......man fitted new door to barn and is fitting a new inner mesh door so we can give them light and fresh air.........talked to local commercial chicken breeder...and you lot are too young to hear his reply.........he says when the first bird flu is proven in france they will take action till then********...........so seems as usual its wait and see ..........tricia and i are making our own provisions for the chooks....new doors etc....maybe even tarpaulin roofing of courtyard ..will keep you posted...............mojo
