Turkey has third bird flu death

A Turkish girl has died from bird flu, days after her brother and sister died from the disease.
The girl, 11, who lived on a poultry farm in eastern Turkey, was being treated in hospital after her siblings became infected with bird flu.

The cases are the first human deaths from bird flu outside Asia, where the virus has killed more than 70 people.

Some 25 people are being treated across Turkey for bird flu-like symptoms, according to reports.

The latest victim, Hulya Kocyigit, died early on Friday in a hospital in the eastern city of Van.

Another brother is still being treated, but a doctor told the BBC his condition was improving.

The girl's brother, Mehmet Ali Kocyigit, 14, died on Sunday, while their sister Fatma, 15, died on Thursday.

All four children developed symptoms including a high fever, coughing and bleeding in the throat.

Turkey fights back
The family live and work on a poultry farm near the town of Dogubeyazit, close to the Iranian border.

The town has been placed under quarantine and no people or animals are allowed to move in or out of the district, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Turkey is carrying out a mass cull of poultry in an effort to stem the spread of bird flu. Some 3,500 birds have been culled so far in the Van region and extra supplies of Tamilflu medicine have been sent.

Initial tests in Turkey have confirmed that two of the children died from the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

There has been no official confirmation of the strain, as samples are being analysed by a UK laboratory, but the WHO has said it is likely that it is H5N1.

"We don't expect a pandemic or anything like that in Turkey but there is a real risk for people who are in close contact with fowl," said Health Minister Recep Akdag.

Experts from the WHO and the EU have been sent to Turkey to help them deal with the outbreak

Chop their heads off, or gas them with exhaust fumes or something.

I know they have thousands to do & have to do it quickly, but it's so inhuman

that is just so awful ~ they obviously don't even consider them to be living creatures ~ so very sad for all those poor chickens
