those click together barrels aren't usually that good are they? My daughter had one for strawberries, it took an age to put up and like you say I don't think it went together easily

It isn't together right, the metal poles that are supposed to hold it all together keep pinging off!

If I use a sack do I have to have it off the ground?

no, there's no need to. The only thing I think I might be inclined to do is if it were on concrete I might put a piece of bubble wrap underneath, just in case it goes very cold. If the potatoe barrel won't go together, pack it up and take it back ~ unfit for the purpose etc....

I don't think it needs to be off the ground - my brother tried it with an empty compost sack and just put it on the floor in his greenhouse....

Just put a few holes in the bottom so any excess water can drain away.

somewhere there was a thread, and I think it must have been on pp about using the chicken poo and shavings in the potatoe sacks. I think they were saying just put that straight in so you have fertiliser as well, but I'm not sure ~ I thought we had to compost it first. Maybe try a search on there. You don't need to know now it was for the earthing up.
