I have seen several mentions of putting vaseline on combs and red bits to protect them from freezing. Could anyone expand on this as I would like to know how necessary it is and at what temperatures or weather conditions. I have a large pot ready and waiting but I don't want to make them all sticky if I don't need to !

Confused

On the comb, you may get spots of black (especially at the tips) this is frost bite (or a bit of dirt :p)

I quote from the wiki under Winter:
Quote:
It is also suggested that putting vaseline on the combs of the chickens can prevent them getting frost bite on really cold nights. It is mainly recommended for the larger combed varieties, such as leghorn and leghorn hybrids. Catching them, though, is a different matter...

Ive got 4 black rocks, 1 of which seems to be suffering from it. The others are perfectly fine, touch wood.

(I hope im right, but an expert will be here soon to correct if not Razz)

Why waste vaseline if they are going in the pot Laughing

I would make sure its frost damage first it can also be pecking at the comb by other birds,If the comb looks wet with the glistening vaseline the peckers might do it more so watch them a bit and see if there is a culprit.we have a couple of rhodeys that are forever pecking the other hens.

Depending on the temperature,is when you apply the Vaseline. As long as the weather is above freezing---there is no use.If you have large combed birds they will be affected more in the freezing weather than smaller combed varieties. The biggest thing is cold weather is to block off the wind and and drafts. Some say Vaseline is good and others say it doesn`t do any good.Mine stay in insulated dog houses with straw and the temperature has been in the low teens Fahrenheit,I have not put anything on them and they are doing fine, they stay in the houses--come out to eat and drink and go back inside. My hens have small combs and the roosters have been dubbed--I`m not saying dub yours,I`m just telling you why mine aren`t having a problem

Thanks for all the advice. I will put the Vaseline on them if the temp drops below freezing. Their house is relatively warm and draught free so I don't think they would have a problem during the night.
This site is great, ask a question and half a dozen people reply! Thank you !
