|
|
I would gratefully appreciate some advice!
When i went to let my girls out this morning, one of the Sussex seems to have lost the back part of her comb right down to her scalp. There is a well formed scab and no evidence of any blood or other trauma that i can see. She seems bright and happy as normal.
Should i just leave her?
What can have caused it? I haven't noticed the others picking on her and she is still interacting fully with them. I am totally flummoxed!!
Many thanks in anticipation.... |

| The comb missing could be due to some injury, such as catching it in a wire or by an animal attack--maybe a rat .As long as she is doing fine and she isn`t being pecked on by other chickens--I would put something like neosporin or another antibiotic cream on it and then don`t worry about it--if the others do start to peck at her( probably won`t since it is scabbed over) Then separate her until it is all healed. |

That was quick!
thank you - you have put my mind at rest.
Now for a silly question - will it grow back? |

Unfortunately, the answer is no it won`t grow back. Now I`ll get some disagreement here--but if it is badly torn and flopping around, you may want to consider dubbing her.But it the rest of the comb is pretty much normal--leave her alone .
BTW No question is silly or stupid if you don`t know the answer. |

Thank you - i kind of thought that may be the case - if your ear falls off it stays off!! I think the most puzzling thing it that is was such a clean job - it is about the back quarter sliced off at the base - i couldn't have done better with a sharp pair of scissors!
I will start keeping an eye for rats - bloody cats, maybe i should stop feeding them and put them on starvation rations... On second thoughts - no i don't fancy the thought of entrails all over the kitchen floor on a daily basis! |

| With such a clean cut--she could have cut it on some metal or something real sharp--if she is doing fine--let her be--look around at any wire or look for something that she could have got into--if you see anything with sharp edges or something she could have got caught on--look for signs of dried blood and get rid of it. |
