Now I`m picking up what you are putting down.As long as they are your private stock, what difference does it make? That law seems unreasonable. When you buy Canned Tuna or Salmon or Jack Mackerel, the people at the store don`t know you are buying it for your chickens.I`m afraid I would have to ignore that law, because the protein helps them through the moult and the protein is good for the feather development. With all the problems we are having here concerning our chickens ,most ignore the laws , especially those that the Animal right Activists get passed.Guess Americans are more rebellious that others and we believe ,what is mine is mine and do not want to be told by anyone what we can do with our animals.

What problems? I don't have any problems with my flock. And I find that the laws are extrememly lax here. We can purchase most of our meds over the counter.

BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) or mad cow disease that affected the UK in the eighties is widely believed by the scientific bods to have been caused by feeding Beef and Dairy cattle with feed pellets containing processed Offal- including the brains -of slaughtered farm animals which included the brains of sheep believed to have been infected with 'scrapie' a very similar degenerative brain disease.
The disease it is believed to have mutated and thus become infectious to cattle.
The British Farm industry suffered for years because no one would eat beef from here because everyone thought they would catch mad cow disease.
Chicken pellets used to contain ground up carcases of chickens and Offal from beef pigs and sheep.
Following BSE the European Union passed a directive banning all feedstuffs for livestock or poultry from containing any processed animal products.Or the feeding of swill or fish meal.

We dont like petty interference here either believe it or not but on this measure alone its a good thing in my opinion.

I have no problem feeding fish to chickens personally other than strong oily fish can make the meat or eggs have a strong taste if fed over a long time.

There is a lot of protein in wheat cereal and Fat in maize close to what can be gained from feeding fish.
Providing there is adequate quality feed available to moulting hens there should not be a problem with their moulting and re-feathering process.
Olive oil and primrose oil is equally as high in omega 3 protein found in fish -if a supplement is found to be necessary.
There are bound to be differences of opinion on whats best and like you say each to his own.
Tinned fish here is very expensive anyway compared to what you pay in the US so I would prefer to eat it myself Laughing

I see your point. But believe it or not, animal protein is better than vegetable protein.Try eating no meat about 2 weeks before a hair cut and then after the haircut, eat vegetable protein before the next haircut.See how slowly your hair and nails grow. Then after the next haircut, eat animal protein and your hair and nails will grow faster and your hair will shine more--same thing for the chicken feathers.
You could go fishing and catch something--cook it and take the bones out and feed that.As far as the taste goes ,you only feed it about 2 or 3 times a week and only about a teaspoon per chicken while in moult.
Another good way is to hard boil some eggs and put them in a blender and blend them until you can`t see anything that looks like an egg shell or piece of a shell( Yes feed the shell and all). You do this so the chickens can`t get the idea that any pieces of shell that is recognizable to them looks like an egg shell--that way they won`t start eating eggs that are laid.

Thanks, things sure have changed over there since I was there.Still beautiful countries for the most part.
Deb ,you asked what problems with our chickens. How often have you tried to ship chickens? There are certain groups out there that are trying to make it a law that certain chickens ,can not be owned or else it is a felony. There are people in some groups in some states that have police powers ,yet they are not police or anything other than being a regular ( Not ) citizen, with their own agenda ,of depriving law abiding citizens of owning animals without any due process. They come in and take and destroy animals (pets and livestock) without any legal means and aren`t help responsible for their actions.

Either I live WAY too far out in the boon-docks, or am just niave, but I have never heard of that taking place in the northern States...from Wisconsin to Oregon. I have heard stories about the animal activists who would rather kill off an entire ecosystem to save one little fish that is not fit for human consumption and has been poisoned out of lakes and streams for decades, never to be fully eradicated as they are too prolific. Are these the people you are referring to? Our community is doing battle in court with them over the water rights right now due to the sucker fish. (Don't get me started on this one.)

Deb
Yes they are the ones. They are so bad in the South ,that my State a few years back had to pass a law that prohibited anyone interfering with the sports of hunting and fishing.
