There seems to be a bit of confusion regarding statements made on this thread. For clarification....
1 Chicken Smuggler stated that HE uses the 3 S method. It is a known fact that he is a resident of the US. I clarified what the 3 S method was. Over here in the US, it is a well known term. There are many irresponsible dog owners, and persistent predator wildlife. When complaints are made time and time again to Animal Control and they have to repeatedly come out to your property to deal with the situation and drag the negligent dog owner into court time after time or get called out for a wildlife problem only to arrive well after the fact and the predator has moved on, they finally tell the livestock owner to give up and use the 3 S method. I have been given permission from our local Animal Control Officer to employ this method. I have not and WILL not used the 3 S's on a domesticated animal. But I have dealt with wildlife predators in this manner.
It is understood that the laws governing the UK are very different from the US. Some of these are already understood by over seas members, some of it is not. We are all learning yet....heck, that is exactly why we are all here.
I have re-read this thread several times. I am not aware of one place where someone was told to shoot the birds of prey. It was only explained what can and unfortunately does take place in the US.
If either of us over seas members have upset/insulted anyone with our methods, it was purely unintentional. It was just and explanation of how we have to deal with things here. And yes, it is MUCH easier having been granted the permission to employ the 3 S's rather than seeing the problem occur time after time without any true recourse. I do prefer to have it dealt with the first time, rather than waiting till a third of my flock has been desecrated over the course of many months.

You are so correct. Our methods here in the U.S. are different than in other countries.I would not tell anyone to intentionally break the law,by killing a protected species. My comments were directed more at others from the U.S. that understand our culture .There are other ways to control the predator problem else where.Such as build good pens that are covered on all sides and on top with a good chicken wire and/or rat cloth, combined with the use of electricity.Another good way is with a good chicken dog. Some of my friends have them and nothing gets into the chicken yard. |
