We have hens and ducks as pets then others that are called dinner.
I was born and bred in a city but always wanted to live like I do now, my freinds and family were amazed that I could even think about eating my own. We ate hardly any meat before, now we have lamb, chicken and duck. I still have to put it in the freezer first
The first time was horrible it took me weeks to work up to doing the deed then a few months in the freezer, I didn't dare tell the kids the first time we ate home grown meat.
Now the kids won't eat supermarket meat and question where everything comes from.
I will never get used to 'doing the deed', although it's no-where near as bad as the first time. I look on it that they have had a great life roaming over 5 acres, been fed really well and the end is quick and stress free
there are still some that are meant to be dinner but turn into pets |

I wish I coul do that, I cannot imagine ever being able to, but maybe I'll have a French neighbour who will be happy to do it, in exchange for some meat. If so, I think I will consider more livestock |

what gets me is that the locals who quite happily take lambs to town and then eat the meat can't dispatch a spare roo,
the crofter down the road phones me when he has surplas
I'm not the only english ex townie who does it either
Him next door makes himself scarce when I'm doing the deed, very strange |
